Pitt women’s soccer ends a tumultuous season, taking down No. 1 Notre Dame

The Panthers women’s soccer team concluded a challenging season with a stunning upset over No. 1 Notre Dame at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Few anticipated such an ending, but Pitt delivered a remarkable 1-0 victory, secured by an 85th-minute goal.

After a late corner kick from senior forward Margaret Wilde, junior defender Mya Archibald executed a precise header into the left post to give the Panthers the decisive lead.

Junior goalkeeper Abby Reisz played one of her best matches of the season, making six critical saves, including an early first-half stop that halted Notre Dame’s offensive rhythm.

Notre Dame’s missed title chance

Notre Dame entered the match needing only a win or draw to seal the ACC regular-season championship. The trophy was already waiting beneath Ambrose Urbanic Field, but Pitt refused to let the Irish celebrate on their turf.

“Pitt played like a team with something to prove,” said observers after the match, impressed by the Panthers' composure under pressure.

Guided by junior captain Olivia Lee, Pitt’s defensive line remained tight and disciplined, limiting Notre Dame’s chances and maintaining control throughout. Despite the Irish scoring eight goals in a previous game this season, they were held scoreless by a determined Pitt squad that fought to the final whistle.

First historic victory over a top-ranked team

This marks the first time in program history that Pitt women’s soccer has defeated a No. 1-ranked opponent. Though the Panthers ended the season with a 6-10-2 record and only two ACC victories, their final performance demonstrated resilience and growth amid adversity.

Author’s summary: Pitt closed a difficult season with a historic 1-0 upset over top-ranked Notre Dame, proving tenacity and discipline can outshine expectation and form.
