Staff Writer Rithika Praturu previews the University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball team as it embarks on the 2025–26 season with fresh talent and heightened determination.
Head coach Tory Verdi, now in his third season with the Panthers, centers his recruiting on a core belief: “If you want to be great, you come to the University of Pittsburgh.” With last season’s 13 wins — the most in recent program history — as a foundation, Verdi is focused on building momentum and starting the new season strong.
The team’s roster features 10 new players, including seven freshmen and multiple transfers, alongside four returning athletes. This mix brings enhanced athleticism, versatility, and skill — elements Verdi identified as previously lacking.
“Our roster is better today than it was the last few years,” Verdi said at ACC Tipoff, highlighting confidence in the team's development and chemistry.
Competing in the highly competitive ACC, the Panthers expect every game to challenge them. However, the combination of refreshed energy, a deeper bench, and a strong cultural foundation fuels optimism regarding their ability to perform consistently.
The critical focus now is how rapidly this new group will gel and convert its promise into victories.
Pitt women’s basketball enters the new season with a largely new lineup and strong leadership, aiming to translate cultural growth into consistent success in the ACC.
