Lucy Liu Debuts Her Shortest Haircut in Years

Lucy Liu has entered her "lob era" with a fresh new look, showcased in her starring role in the upcoming drama Rosemead. The former Charlie's Angels star appears with a short, side-parted hairstyle that barely grazes her collarbone in the film's trailer.

Rosemead premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June and is set for theatrical release on December 5. The movie follows Irene (Liu) and her son Joe (Lawrence Shou) as they navigate life after Joe's diagnosis of schizophrenia. It is adapted from a 2017 Los Angeles Times article by Frank Shyong titled "A dying mother's plan: Buy a gun. Kill her son."

A New Direction for Lucy Liu

This role marks a significant shift for Liu, known primarily for lighter, action-oriented roles in series like Ally McBeal, Watching the Detectives, and Why Women Kill. She described the project to Variety as requiring careful script assembly due to the limited knowledge of the family's story.

“As there was not a lot that was known about this family, the script had to be pieced together,” Liu told Variety. “In some ways, it’s a little bit of a thriller, because people know the final act and some of the details, and then the rest had to be kind of filled in, in order to understand the dynamic between Irene and her son.”

During the Tribeca premiere, Liu also discussed her interest in this and similar projects in an interview with Parade, emphasizing her commitment to exploring more serious and complex roles.

Summary

Lucy Liu embraces a bold new look and a dramatic role in Rosemead, marking a mature turn in her acting career with a focus on challenging, true-story-based narratives.
