Rosemead, starring Lucy Liu, opens in theaters on December 5. PEOPLE presents an exclusive trailer revealing Liu as Irene, a mother grappling with her teenage son’s schizophrenia diagnosis.
Directed by Eric Lin and based on a true story from a 2017 Los Angeles Times article, Rosemead tells the poignant tale of a Chinese American mother and son. Liu, 56, stars alongside Lawrence Shou.
The story follows Irene, described as an “ailing woman who takes drastic measures to protect her troubled teenage son” Joe. As his dark obsessions worsen, Irene faces impossible decisions about how far she will go to safeguard him and what sacrifices she must make.
“This isn't going to just go away like some cold. He needs to learn to live with it. You both do.”
The film adapts Frank Shyong’s 2017 article that highlights a terminally ill mother’s tragic choice in confronting her son’s schizophrenia diagnosis.
Since its premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, Liu has garnered multiple film festival accolades for her compelling performance in Rosemead.
“Audiences have never seen her in a role like this,” notes the exclusive trailer coverage by PEOPLE.
