This season, Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson has attracted more attention for his off-court relationships than his on-court performance, which has been underwhelming. Over eight games, he averages 8.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 20.4 minutes per game.
Most concerning are his shooting percentages: a career-low 34% from the field and 29% from beyond the arc. For one of the greatest shooters in NBA history, these numbers are notably disappointing.
Before Dallas’ recent game, coach Jason Kidd benched Thompson to try to spark the team. Although he was likely displeased by the change, Thompson remains positive and confident in his abilities.
“I don’t mind,” Thompson said about not starting, according to the Dallas Morning News. “I know it is.”
At this stage in his career, Thompson values his continued role on the team, whether as a starter or coming off the bench.
“I’m just happy to be here, my friend,” Thompson shared. “Because it’s hard to even make it this far in this business.”
He reflected on the challenge of longevity in professional basketball, drawing a comparison to a famous movie scene:
“It’s hard, especially as time goes on. It’s like the scene in Sandlot at the end, where they fade to the background. It’s kind of surreal.”
Klay Thompson accepts his bench role with gratitude and maintains confidence despite his career-low shooting stats this season, emphasizing the challenge of lasting in professional basketball.
