Kentucky QB Zach Calzada’s Turbulent College Journey
Zach Calzada, quarterback for the Kentucky Wildcats, has experienced a rollercoaster college football career marked by several transfers and fluctuating playing time. Despite these challenges, he has consistently sought opportunities to lead on the field.
Early Career and Texas A&M
Initially a three-star recruit per 247Sports, Calzada committed to Texas A&M. His freshman year was hampered by multiple injuries, limiting him to three games. He barely played as a sophomore before becoming the full-time starter in 2021. That season, he completed 56.1% of his passes for 2,185 yards, throwing 17 touchdowns against nine interceptions.
Transfers and Continued Pursuit of Starting Role
After 2021, Calzada transferred to Auburn aiming to replace departing quarterback Bo Nix. However, he lost the starting competition and moved again after one season, this time to FCS program Incarnate Word.
At Incarnate Word, he found notable success over two seasons. In 2024, Calzada improved his completion to 66%, passing for 3,744 yards with 35 touchdowns and nine interceptions. The team finished 11-3 and reached the FCS quarterfinals.
Return to SEC with Kentucky
With one year of eligibility left, Calzada transferred once more, returning to the SEC by joining Kentucky. He secured the Wildcats’ starting quarterback position at the start of the season.
