Officers in Stockport are investigating a fire started near a war memorial just days before Remembrance Sunday. Emergency services were called around 9:50 pm on Wednesday, 5 November, after reports of a group of males near the Cenotaph in Marple.
A bin and wooden pallets were set on fire, causing damage to the nearby ground. Marple neighbourhood officers are appealing for information related to the incident.
The incident sparked strong responses from local residents and councillors on social media. Marple North councillor Steve Gribbon described the act as “disgraceful” and affirmed it “will not be tolerated.”
“This is an absolutely disgraceful act and will not be tolerated,” wrote Steve Gribbon on Facebook.
Police Sergeant Rachel Walton of the Stockport East Neighbourhood Policing Team condemned the act as reckless, highlighting the potential for greater damage or injury.
“This was a reckless act that could have ended with more damage and even serious injury. Police units arrived on scene within minutes and the fire was quickly extinguished by colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. We are working closely with partners at Stockport Council and the fire service to ensure the area is cleaned and restored.”
