Flag Status – Office of the Governor
The President of the United States and the Governor of Idaho have the authority to direct that U.S. and State of Idaho flags be flown at half-staff within the state on designated occasions.
Half-Staff Flag Directive
This directive honors the memory of former Vice President Richard "Dick" Cheney, who served as the 46th Vice President of the United States under President George W. Bush.

Flag Code Reference
According to Title 4 of the United States Code, Chapter 1:
- The flag shall be flown at half-staff for 30 days following the death of the President or a former President.
- It shall be flown for 10 days after the death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
- From the day of death until interment, the flag is flown at half-staff for an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or a Governor of a State, territory, or possession.
- On the day of death and the following day, the flag is flown at half-staff for a Member of Congress.
The date of interment for former Vice President Cheney has not yet been announced at the time of this notice.
