Released Prisoner and Registered Sex Offender Arrested After Public Sighting

Brahim Kaddour Cherif, a registered sex offender, was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth, prompting a large-scale search that ended with his arrest after a member of the public spotted him and alerted the police.

Details of Release and Conviction

The Metropolitan Police were notified on Tuesday about the accidental release of 24-year-old Cherif. He had been convicted in November 2024 for indecent exposure following an incident earlier that year in March. Cherif received an 18-month community order and was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years.

Location and Arrest

Cherif, an Algerian national, was believed to have connections to Tower Hamlets and frequently visited the Westminster area. On Friday, 7 November, at 11:23 am, a member of the public reported seeing a man matching Cherif's description near Capital City College on Blackstock Road in Islington.

A Met Police spokesperson stated: "Officers responded immediately and at 11:30 am detained a man matching Cherif's description. His identity was confirmed and he was arrested for being unlawfully at large."

In addition, Cherif was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker in connection with a previous unrelated incident. He is currently in police custody, and the Prison Service has been informed.
