Conservative Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux announced his resignation from the House of Commons amid rumors he might cross the floor to join the governing Liberals. The news followed days of speculation, as the party sought to quell the unrest caused by a turbulent week.
In a letter obtained by the National Post, Jeneroux informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin on Thursday about his decision to leave Parliament at an unspecified date. He described it as a difficult but necessary choice.
“It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one,” he wrote.
First elected in 2015, Jeneroux did not elaborate on the reasons behind his sudden resignation. He expressed respect for colleagues from both parties without directly addressing Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.
He noted his admiration “for the many remarkable individuals on both sides of the aisle” of the House of Commons.
Jeneroux’s departure marks the second Conservative MP to leave caucus abruptly within three days, presenting a significant setback for Poilievre just months ahead of a leadership review scheduled for January.
