Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Review

Zelda’s journey into Hyrule’s distant past becomes the most captivating entry in the series to date. With Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, it’s difficult not to reflect on the narrative weight of Tears of the Kingdom and the way Age of Calamity reshaped the backstory of Breath of the Wild.

Zelda's adventure in the ancient past of Hyrule sticks the landing to be the best Hyrule Warriors yet.

While earlier Zelda titles rarely emphasized storytelling, recent installments attempted to push those boundaries, sometimes stumbling but never without ambition. I appreciated how Tears of the Kingdom unfolded behind the scenes of Breath of the Wild’s world, yet I still felt some emotional gaps remained.

On paper, Age of Imprisonment promised everything I had hoped for in the original arc — a narrative full of emotion and meaningful moments. Whether it could truly achieve that depended on its execution, both as a story and as a Warriors game. Fortunately, it surpasses expectations and emerges as a sleeper hit, easily ranking among my favorites of the year.

Of course, if you’re reading this review, you probably already know your way around a typical Dynasty Warriors title — and that foundation adds an exciting layer to this Hyrule spin on the formula.
