First and Last Bakery, LLC of Hartford, CT, is recalling certain tomato sauce products due to a potential health risk identified by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.
The products were distributed in Connecticut and Massachusetts, including through Big Y and possibly other retailers, starting from September 22, 2025, through October 28, 2025. Production and sales have been suspended to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. No illnesses have been reported so far.
The sauces are sold in 26 FL OZ jars under the brand "First and Last," each with unique UPC numbers.
The products were made without an approved scheduled process or any evaluation to confirm the process was safe. Improper processing of acidified or low-acid canned foods can lead to the growth of Clostridium botulinum, which produces a dangerous toxin.
Botulism, a potentially fatal food poisoning, can cause symptoms such as general weakness, dizziness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, trouble breathing, muscle weakness, abdominal swelling, and constipation.
Consumers should not consume these products and are advised to dispose of or return them to the place of purchase.
The recall of First and Last tomato sauce products highlights critical food safety concerns related to improper processing and the risk of botulism poisoning.
