A group of math teachers at Cienega High School encountered controversy after their Halloween costume, featuring shirts labeled “Problem Solved” with fake blood stains, went viral. Initially, Turning Point USA claimed the shirts mocked the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
The Vail School District clarified that the costume was not intended to reference Charlie Kirk and noted that the same shirts had been worn during Halloween the previous year. A photo dated October confirmed this.
“We shouldn’t have worn them, and we shouldn’t have posted it in retrospect, and I have deep sympathy and understanding for all people who are victims of violence, including Charlie Kirk and his family,” said John Carruth, Superintendent of the Vail School District.
Carruth emphasized that the image was taken out of context and quickly spread without proper verification, which caused harm to the teachers involved. He also mentioned that no complaints were raised by students or parents until the controversy arose online.
Following the viral spread of the photo, the school district and the teachers have received threats from across the country.
The controversy over the Halloween costumes at Cienega High School was fueled by misinterpretation, leading to widespread backlash and threats despite the school district's clarification and context.
