Astronomy: What is astronomy?

What is astronomy?

Astronomy is an ancient science that began as the study of the stars and their movements. But with the passage of time goes a little bit further and we can say that:

Astronomy is the science that studies all the celestial bodies (stars, planets, galaxies, comets, etc.), its location, and the laws of their movements throughout the Universe.

Meaning of astronomy

The origin of the word astronomy it is in classical Greece of antiquity. And consists of: "astron"(stars), and "nomos"(the order or rule).

This leads us to say that, from the beginning of the story, we speak of astronomy as the study of the objects that we observe in the sky and the laws that make their movements.

What are the characteristics of astronomy?

Astronomy has certain characteristics that distinguish it as a science well-structured, among which I highlight these 5 qualities of this science:

  • Astronomy uses the scientific method to study the phenomena of the stars, celestial bodies, satellites, space matter and galaxies.
  • This science astronomical not only is studying the celestial objects in isolation, but the relationship existing between them and their movements.
  • Astronomy uses the optical systems as telescopes, binoculars, and other more sophisticated equipment used by researchers to perform their astronomical observations.
  • The study of astronomy also be performed with observations simple view.
  • Astronomy strives to make the knowledge of the night sky practical and useful to the society and the progress of humanity.
